Dame Blanche

Dame BlancheBathory

Dame Blanche

Also Known As: White Lady (translated), la Dame Blanche, Dames Blanches (plural form in some regions)
Culture/Region: Northern France (especially Normandy), parts of Belgium and Luxembourg
Progenitor Lineage: Witch/Sorcerer, boundary-testing variant
Belief Framework: Northern French folk tradition of supernatural women who compel travellers to dance with them or assist them at crossings, with failure to comply resulting in harm

Physical Appearance

A woman of striking beauty in white clothing, encountered at bridge crossings, narrow passes, or threshold locations. Some accounts describe a quality of translucence or an unusual perfection to the white garments. The Dame Blanche is not a ghost (Restless Spirit lineage) though she is often confused with one: she is a living practitioner whose power and longevity have produced such an attenuation of her human qualities that she has taken on an eerie, spectral quality.

Origin in This World

The Dame Blanche represents a French regional expression of the Witch/Sorcerer lineage where the transgression that opened the channel was the violation of hospitality obligations in their inverse form: rather than failing to help a traveller, the practitioner crossed the line by compelling help from travellers through supernatural coercion. The result is a practitioner whose power is specifically bound to liminal locations (bridges, crossings, passage points) and whose magical practice takes the form of obligation-imposing rituals. In the World's terms, the Dame Blanche has developed a genuine ability to create magically binding social obligations at threshold locations, which generates power whenever the obligation is fulfilled and causes harm to those who refuse it.

Abilities

Threshold binding (the creation of genuine magical obligation at liminal locations), a glamour that enhances her physical presence to compel attention and cooperation, and the ability to inflict direct harm on those who break the obligation once bound. Long-established Dames Blanches develop a specific territorial sense around their preferred crossing locations, and can detect anyone approaching the threshold from significant distances.

Belief-Based Weaknesses

The Dame Blanche's power is specifically anchored to her threshold location: removing her from her chosen crossing point significantly weakens her. Iron placed at the threshold she governs disrupts the binding mechanic. Individuals who approach the threshold with genuine knowledge of what they are dealing with (and thus the ability to make a genuinely informed, uncoerced choice about engaging with the obligation) are significantly more resistant to the compulsion.
