Pricolici

PricoliciLyca

Pricolici

Also Known As: Pricolitch, Vircolac (in some usage, though distinct from Vârcolac)
Culture/Region: Romania, Transylvania, Moldova
Progenitor Lineage: Werewolf, undead-adjacent Romanian variant
Belief Framework: Romanian belief that certain evil or restless dead can return as wolf-shaped revenants, distinct from the Vârcolac's living-being cosmology

Physical Appearance

The Pricolici presents as a wolf of unusual size and intelligence, or occasionally as a hybrid form, but is distinguished from the Vârcolac and standard Loup-Garou by its undead quality: the Pricolici is cold to the touch even in animal form, does not breathe visibly in cold air, and has a waxy or desiccated quality to its physical appearance. The eyes are often described as having no reflection.

Origin in This World

The Pricolici is a distinct Romanian variant where the werewolf lineage's transmission coincided with belief in the individual as already being spiritually compromised or dead. In Romanian folk tradition, certain people, particularly those who led violent or immoral lives, were believed to be doomed to rise after death as wolf-spirits. The Pricolici manifestation occurs when this belief template is applied at the moment of transmission: the bitten individual who already believes (or whose community believes) that they are spiritually dead or irredeemable can develop a Pricolici expression of the lycanthrope condition rather than a standard Vârcolac one. The condition is not literally undeath, but the belief framework shapes the physiology so convincingly that conventional tests for vital signs produce anomalous results.

Abilities

The Pricolici shares most lycanthrope physical capabilities but with added resilience to physical trauma: the belief in their own undeath reduces the psychosomatic impact of pain and wounding, making them exceptionally difficult to stop through conventional force. They do not require sleep in the conventional sense, can remain in transformed state for extended periods without the exhaustion that eventually forces living lycanthropes back to human form, and their territorial instincts are extremely pronounced.

Belief-Based Weaknesses

The traditional Romanian countermeasures for restless dead, such as proper burial rites, salt, and iron nails, have genuine effect on the Pricolici due to the undeath belief framework. An individual who can genuinely and convincingly argue (or demonstrate) that the Pricolici is in fact still alive and not spiritually dead can weaken the undeath-anchored aspects of their physiology significantly. Silver functions on them as on all lycanthropes.
