Pontianak

PontianakVlad

PONTIANAK

Also Known As: Pontianak (Malay/Indonesian), Kuntilanak (Javanese/Indonesian), Langsuir (Malay ancestral form)
Culture/Region of Origin: Malaysia, Indonesia, Singapore
Progenitor: Vampire Progenitor (via the same Southeast Asian expansion that produced the Penanggalan, representing a distinct variant based on the Langsuir rather than the Penanggalan framework)
Belief Framework: Malay beliefs about women who died in childbirth becoming malevolent banana-tree haunting spirits, the Langsuir as the original Malaysian vampiric woman, Pontianak as a specific variant of her children

Physical Appearance

The Pontianak presents as a beautiful young woman in a white dress, with long black hair, who is first detected by the sweet floral scent she emits (which is supernatural and not tied to perfume or any physical source). The scent shifts to a distinctive rotting smell when the Pontianak is actively feeding or agitated. Her back, if visible, shows a hole at the neck, which is the specific tell of her origin as a Langsuir-lineage creature.

She is associated specifically with banana trees, in which she rests by day, and is most active at night near places where recent births or deaths have occurred.

Abilities

Beautiful Deception: Like the Lidérc, the Pontianak uses beauty as a primary strategy, approaching male victims as an appealing woman in distress.

Scent Projection: The sweet scent she projects creates a mild compulsive attraction in those who encounter it, drawing victims closer.

Feeding Method: The Pontianak feeds primarily on the blood and vitality of infants and children, and secondarily on adult males, through claw attacks that open the abdomen.

Banana Tree Rest: The Pontianak's association with banana trees is functional, not merely symbolic. Banana tree groves provide her with genuine restorative rest-energy.

Belief-Based Weaknesses

Nail in the Neck-Hole: Inserting a nail into the hole at the back of the Pontianak's neck transforms her into a benevolent spirit or (in some traditions) a loving wife. In the world, this creates a genuine binding effect that suppresses her vampiric nature. It is temporary and must be maintained.

Baby Clothing: The Pontianak in Langsuir tradition carried unresolved grief from her death in childbirth. Placing baby clothing in her arms sometimes triggers an emotional state that suspends her aggression.

Certain Trees: Various Southeast Asian protective trees, particularly thorned varieties, and certain ritual plants create barriers.
