OBAYIFO
Also Known As: Obayifo (Ashanti/Ghana), related to Asiman (Dahomean/Benin)
Culture/Region of Origin: Ashanti people of Ghana, with related traditions in Dahomey (modern Benin)
Progenitor: Vampire Progenitor (via West African connection), with significant Witch/Sorcerer Progenitor overlap in the witch-vampire synthesis of Ashanti tradition
Belief Framework: Ashanti beliefs about obayifo as a category of witch-vampire who inhabits a human body and feeds on children and crops, identified by phosphorescent light emitted from armpits and anus at night
Physical Appearance
By day, the Obayifo is completely human, one of the most convincing human-form presentations of any vampire variant. There is no tell available to normal human perception. At night, when the creature feeds or moves through the supernatural space between bodies, it emits a faint phosphorescent light from specific body points, which is the only reliable visual identifier.
Origin in the World
The Obayifo shares significant conceptual space with both the Adze (Ewe) and the Asanbosam (Akan), but represents a distinct type: more socially integrated, more human in presentation, and specifically associated with the destruction of crops and the illness of children rather than direct violent attack. It is the witch-vampire of the community interior rather than the forest-demon at the boundary.
Abilities
Complete Human Integration: The Obayifo's ability to pass as human is its primary power. Unlike many vampire variants that live separately or need to manage exposure carefully, the Obayifo may genuinely be a community elder or respected family member who feeds while the community sleeps.
Crop Spoilage: The Obayifo's proximity to agricultural land causes crops to wither and fail. This is a passive effect, a product of the vampiric drain extending outward into the productive vitality of the land itself.
Children's Blood: The primary feeding target is children, which the Obayifo drains gradually over weeks in a manner that presents as standard childhood illness.
Belief-Based Weaknesses
Phosphorescence Detection: The light emission, which the Obayifo cannot fully suppress, is the primary detection method and once identified, the creature loses its most important advantage.
Ashanti Protective Medicine: Specific Ashanti spiritual practices, herbs, and ancestral invocations create genuine protection when applied with full belief and knowledge.
