ASWANG
Also Known As: Aswang (Filipino umbrella term), Manananggal (separating torso variant), Tik-tik / Wak-wak (bird-witch variant), Wakwak (large bat-winged variant), Busaw (corpse-thief variant)
Culture/Region of Origin: Philippines, with regional variations across Luzon, the Visayas, and Mindanao
Progenitor: Vampire Progenitor (via Southeast Asian trade networks), though the OVM notes the classification is complicated by the Aswang's significant overlap with other Progenitor types
Belief Framework: Filipino folk beliefs about shapeshifting night-witches, the malevolent twin of the benevolent albularyo healer, creatures who consume viscera and unborn children
Physical Appearance
The Aswang is unique among vampire-lineage classifications in being genuinely an umbrella category for multiple distinct subtypes that are classified together by Filipino folk tradition. OVM analysis has identified at minimum five distinct supernatural entities operating under the Aswang label, of which three (the blood-drinking witch, the Manananggal, and the Wakwak) are connected to the Vampire Progenitor lineage, and two (the grave-robbing Busaw and the corpse-possessing variant) connect to Demonic/Monstrous Progenitor lineage.
In all forms, the Aswang presents by day as a quiet, shy, unremarkable townsperson, often actively working to be considered the least notable member of a community. The transformation is nocturnal and dramatic.
Manananggal Form: The upper half of the body separates from the lower, sprouts leathery bat-wings, and flies in search of victims, preferring unborn children which it extracts through a proboscis tongue. The lower half of the body remains behind in a hidden location.
Witch Form: Shapeshifting into a large dog, pig, or cat, with enhanced physical capabilities.
Wakwak Form: Large bat-like creature of impressive wingspan, primarily aerial, feeding from above.
Abilities
Shapeshifting: Comprehensive ability to adopt human or multiple animal forms.
Proboscis Tongue: The Manananggal's feeding method is through a needle-like tongue that can pass through walls and floors to reach sleeping victims, extracting blood and vitality without direct physical presence in the room.
Victim Detection: The Aswang's most folkloric ability: it can be identified approaching by the sound of the Tik-tik (a bird companion that disguises the creature's presence by calling "tik-tik" more loudly the farther away the creature is, and more softly as it approaches, inversely tricking the listener).
Disease Transfer: The bite of the Aswang transfers a specific wasting illness that is vampiric in mechanism but presents clinically as progressive systemic illness.
Belief-Based Weaknesses
Garlic and Salt: Both effective, operating through the Filipino belief-framework that these substances carry purifying properties.
Sting Ray Tail Whip: A sting ray's tail, fashioned into a whip, is described in Filipino tradition as lethal to Aswang. In the world, the sting ray tail carries a neutralizing spiritual charge that disrupts the Aswang's form-coherence.
Vinegar and Ash: The Manananggal's lower body must be found and destroyed (covered in ash or salt) while she is separated. Without the lower body to return to, she cannot survive dawn.
Direct Sunlight: While Aswang are not as severely sunlight-vulnerable as Strigoi, full direct sunlight causes progressive deterioration.
Cutting Off the Head: The most reliable permanent disposal.
